Nigeria has launched its first Concrete Mix Design Manual. The manual was launched by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) alongside other stakeholders in the cement industry such as Lafarge Africa Plc at the 26th Engineering Assembly at the International Conference Centre Abuja yesterday.

The President of COREN, Engr. Kashim A. Ali said the manual for practitioners using concrete must now replace the foreign manuals which produced the danger of non-uniformity because of its diverse sources.

“The Concrete Mix Design Manual for Nigeria, therefore, provides homogeneity for all concrete designs,” he said.

The Marketing Director, Lafarge Africa Plc, Mr Vipul Agrawal, said the launching of the Concrete Mix Design Manual meant a lot to Nigeria.

“Nigerians for the first time have their own guide for mixing of concrete in building and infrastructure.

This was through the painstaking effort of stakeholders led by COREN, Nigeria Building and Research Institute, cement companies and other stakeholders.

“Everybody practicing civil engineering and building can use this in the selection of materials. It offers you very good practical guide on good construction.” Agrawal said.

The chairman of the technical team which produced the manual, Engr. Prof. Charles Uko, said Nigeria now has a Concrete Mix Design Manual which is uniquely Nigerian.

“At the end of the day we were able to produce a Nigerian Concrete Mix Design Manual. We looked at what was done in the UK, India and Germany, and we came up with something uniquely Nigerian, as it is unique in its processes,” he said.
