The number of women in engineering in Nigeria is still far below the acceptable level. While there has been increasing number of girls in science class, only few of them made it to engineering at University level. In a bid to stem this tide, APWEN, the flagship of professional women in engineering have been working on various innovative programmes to encourage girls to embrace the “E” part of the STEM education.
Nigeria needs more engineers to contribute to the socioeconomic development and the current ratio of men to women in engineering practice is still low compare to the available potentials.
Under its current president, Engr Felicia Agubata, APWEN has been embarking on more creative ways to inspire more young girls to embrace engineering. The key focus is to ‘catch them young”. This method involves grooming them for career in engineering from their days in primary and secondary school and exposing them to the options available in engineering while also offering mentoring, scholarship and many other career enhancing supports.
As part of the efforts to consummate this and provide hand-on mentoring and guide, an annual technical Boot Camp is conceived. Named “Mayen Adetiba Technical Bootcamp for Girls” in honour of one of the founders of APWEN for her pioneering professional roles in leading the way for other women in engineering.
Engr. (Mrs.) Mayen Adetiba FNSE, is an accomplished Civil Engineer who had gone on to become leader among men and has been demystifying old stereotype about women in engineering profession.
The maiden edition of the Mayen Adetiba Technical Bootcamp for Girls is scheduled to take place at Royal Club, Bank PHB Hall, located on 8, Ladoke Akintola Streets, Ikeja GRA between July 25th and 27th 2018. Starting from 9 a.m. daily.
It will feature various activities on sideline such as Safety Session, Technical talk, HSE Talk, Spontaneous games, Networking, Site visits and exploring collaborative opportunities, showcasing of technical skills among other programmes spread across three days.
On hand to deliver the Keynote Address is Engr Mrs Mayen Adetiba, FNSE, FAEng, Past President of Association of Consulting Engineers, while Chief (Mrs) Onikepo Akande, OON, CON, the Immediate Past President of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry and former Minister of Trade is the Special Guest of Honour.
Join us and watch the future of Nigerian engineering as ambitious girls mingle with accompliahed engineers on the pathway to nurturing a fulfilling career in engineering.
