As part of DAWN Commission’s mandate to ensure that the best in us as a people are showcased and given due recognition, and enthroning the values of hardwork, excellence and achievement in the Southwest Region, the Commission today played host to Maryam Opeyemi Raji, who at 21, became the youngest graduating medical student of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (UNILAG) for the 2012/13 academic session.
Indeed, her story is such a remarkable and inspirational one, worthy of celebration. Speaking at the brief ceremony at the 10th Floor Cocoa House office of the Commission, the Director General, Mr. Dipo Famakinwa congratulated Dr. Raji, and informed her that she is now a signpost of success for us all in the Southwest Region. As such, she immediately goes into the Regional talent management system, being midwifed and developed by the Commission, where similar young people of outstanding talent and achievements would be properly monitored, managed and developed into personalities of global status, and who would also serve as an inspiration to other young people.
Dr. Mariam Raji, daughter of a Civil Servant, who lost her father at the age of 8, and who lives in Ibadan, finished her primary education at the age of 7, and went on to Vanguard Secondary School, Epe, Lagos State, where she graduated at the age of 14. She immediately gained admission to study Medicine in UNILAG, actually graduating at 20, but did her convocation at 21.
The young doctor attributed her achievement to God and her parents.
“It was my father who motivated me to become a medical doctor. Unfortunately he died when I was just eight years old. But people around me, especially my mum helped to keep the dream alive and nurture it. It was challenging but having her around kept me focused. And now today I am being celebrated as the youngest medical doctor”.
She thanked the Commission for choosing to celebrate her achievement when they could have chosen to ignore it.
At the end of the ceremony, Dr. Raji had a group photograph with all the members of Staff of the Commission.
Dr. Mariam Opeyemi Raji, for achieving this feat at such a young age, and for bringing honour and glory to your family, the Southwest Nigeria, and indeed the country, DAWN Commission celebrates, and wishes you success as you go on in your career and other future endeavours.
