Nigerian Society of Engineers, ' said it is partnering with the Council for the Regulation of Engineers in Nigeria, COREN, to fight against the infiltration of fake expatriates (non-engineers) from taking crucial engineering jobs in the country.

President of the NSE, Engr. Ademola Olorunfemi made this known during his inauguration as the 29th president of the society on Saturday at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Engr. Olorunfemi stated that the body would join forces with COREN on engineering regulation monitoring to ensure that the relevant laws guiding the sector were adhered to.

According to him, "We will wrestle the importation of the so-called expatriate' non engineers in the country. We shall work with the head of service, chief executive officers of all the International Oil Companies, IOCs and all the service companies giving a deadline by which they should submit the list of all engineers in their employment, with their cadre and NSE membership status.

"We shall vigorously defend and protect the turf of qualified engineers in all spheres of the economy. We shall stimulate law enforcement agencies to bring offenders to justice," he assured.
He also noted that the rising incidence of building collapse, roads failure in the country had become disturbing trends which were mostly accompanied by mass loss of lives and properties worth billions of naira.

Olorunfemi outlined poor workmanship, use of cheap and inferior materials, wrong interpretation of building design, inadequate supervision, non adherence to due process, lack of maintenance culture, greedy attitude of contractors, activities of quacks, amongst others as responsible for the menace.

While giving his valedictory speech, the outgoing president, Engr. Musa Balarabe however urged the new executives to put efforts in what the engineers and the system could benefit from their leadership rather than think of what they tend to benefit from the leading the system.
