Abubakar Lawal: It is time we change the way we design

The tallest completed superstructure or skyscrapper in the world is Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It has 163 floors with height to roof and pinnacle are 828m and 829.8m respectively. The construction of the superstructure was completed in 2010. Other part of the world have built several structures of 100 floors (average floor nos.) for both residential and commercial purposes.

In Nigeria, the tallest building structure can't be up to 30 floors. Professionals in the building industry especially Architects and Engineers should change the way they design to build better buildings that will maximize space and cost effective superstructures. I can't imagine Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria which was suppose to be a masterplan of urban development with highrise structures is just having so many low level floor structures, mostly not up to 10 floors scattered everywhere.

It is high time we changed the way we design, build and construct to conform to what is obtain in the present world order.
