The Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK is offering a grant of £1.3m to professional engineering institutions in Africa to aid engineering research, policy and businesses in sub-Saharan Africa.
President of Federation of African Engineering Organisation (FAEO), the umbrella body of engineering societies in Africa, Engr. Mustapha B. Shehu, who revealed this, said the Africa Catalyst Programme is a programme that is intended to improve the quality of engineering personnel in Nigeria with a view to utilizing them in meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
He said 15 projects in sub-Saharan Africa have been earmarked for the project with each project getting 35,000 pounds to be spent within two years totaling 1.3 million pounds sterling.
Engr. Shehu said apart from supporting the FAEO, the overarching aim is to ensure there is sufficient and appropriately skilled local engineering capacity todrive national and regional development in sub-Saharan Africa.
The FAEO President described the grant as a welcome development which is the culmination of discussion started at the World Federation of Engineers conference in Singapore several months ago.
