The Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu, has said that the completed Galma multipurpose dam in Soba LGA of Kaduna State was capable of providing job opportunities for over 1.1 million people living within its environs. The building of the dam started in 2006 and it has reached 100 percent completion.
Adamu, who inspected the project Thursday, said that apart from the irrigation component of the project, the multipurpose dam with a reservoir capacity of about 186 million cubic metre of water, could also generate 2.2 megawatt of electricity and supply water to 2.2 million people in the surrounding communities up to the ancient city of Zaria.
He commended the level of job done on the project and charged the company to facilitate the construction of the roads for easy access.The minister had earlier commissioned the National Secretariat of the National.
About Galma Dam:
Galma Multipurpose Dam Project was constructed on Galma River in Kaduna State.
It is a 28.5m high zoned earth-fill dam of 2.60km crest length with a reservoir capacity of 186,000,000m³. It is envisaged to supply water to the treatment plant for Zaria City water scheme, supply water for irrigation of 2500hectares of farmland and to also supply water to power a hydro-electric power generation of about 2MW.
The dam will has Roller Compacted Concrete (R.C.C) stepped spillway and a 1.5km long partially lined trapezoidal spill channel. The outlet work is comprised 1No. 2.2m diameter concrete – encased steel pipe conduit which bifurcates downstream to incorporate two pipes of 1.2m and 1.0m diameter to deliver irrigation water to the left and right banks of the river. An intake structure is also incorporated.
The benefits of constructing this dam includes an improvement on the quantity of water supplied for both domestic and industrial purposes, enhancement in fishery and livestock activities, improved agricultural activities and power generation.
