The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has barred 5 sets of engineering students, numbering 142, graduated by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka between 2010 and 2015 from practising.
The decision, according to a press release signed by COREN Registrar, Engr. W. Kamila Maliki and issued by the PRO, Haruna Ojonugwa, was taken at the recently held 151st Ordinary Meeting of the council which was chaired by its Chairman, Engr. Kashim A. Ali.
At the meeting, Council considered the report of the Universities Accreditation Visitation to the Engineering programmes of Nigerian Universities in the 3rd quarter of 2016 where 10 programmes were visited in 4 Universities across the country. While 6 programmes got full accreditation, 4 programmes got interim accreditation.
The affected were discovered to be products of two undergraduate programmes of the University, Agric and Bioresource Engineering, and Polymer and Textile Engineering, which had not been accredited by COREN.
According to a statement issued at the end of the meeting, “The products of such programmes will never be registered and therefore cannot practise Engineering in Nigeria or any part of the world.”
The 2 programmes however now have Interim Accreditation for a period of 2 years with effect from 9th September, 2016.
COREN however approved the registration of 10 Engineering Consulting Firms, 1,626 Engineers, 77 Technologists, 40 Engineering Technicians and 21 Engineering Craftsmen whose capabilities have been adequately tested and found worthy of COREN Registration.
Considering the report of the Regulation and Control Committee, the council noted the alarming rate of building collapse in Nigeria, resulting in the loss of lives and property, and resolved that more than ever before, Erring Engineering Firms and Personnel would be sanctioned in accordance with its Code of Ethics.
