UPDATED: PRESIDENCY BACKS MUSTAFA BALARABE SHEHU FOR WORLD ENGINEERING LEADERSHIP

Again, Federal Government endorses Engr. Mustafa B. Shehu FNSE, FSESN for the position of President, World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO).  The government’s nod of approval was communicated by the Honourable Minister, Science & Technology, Engr. Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, FNSE, FAEng during the NSE – AU STRC Courtesy Call on him.

The Honourable Minister, who enthused on the suitability of Engr. Shehu for President WFEO, remarked that the opportunity has presented itself to further prove to the world that Nigeria and Africa possesses men of integrity, professionalism, and proven track records,who can take the Federation to greater, enviable heights.

In his note of appreciation, Engr. M.B. Shehu, FNSE said he was honoured and humbled by his unveiling in the presence of the Hon. Minister.

He noted that in the history of WFEO, Sub-saharan Africa has not produced President of the world body. His motivation to run for President WFEO stemmed from the prompting of Presidents of member organisations of FAEO who urged him not to stop at the continental level but to aspire to lead at the global level.

Engr. Shehu expressed his appreciation to NSE for giving him the seed support required for expressing interest for the position of President WFEO. Finally, he thanked the Hon. Minister, and other institutions which have lent him overwhelming support for his presidential bid.

It will be recalled that the Federal Government earlier this month promised to support the candidature of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), quest for the Presidency of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO)  when he received the President of NSE, Engr. Otis Anyaeji, and top officials of the African Union (AU), in Abuja.

Dr. Ogbonnaya said, the WFEO election in which Past President of NSE, Engr. Mustafa Balarabe Shehu, is a frontline candidate is major task for the federal government. He said that the government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will go all out to mobilize all friendly nations of the world for their delegates to support Shehu at the polls.

Earlier in that meeting, Engr Anyaeji told him that the support of the federal government by galvanizing countries with the voting right at the election was vital to giving Nigeria victory in December 2017, when the election will be held. He also told him that the AU is eagerly awaiting government approval and sponsorship of Shehu’s candidature to enable them swing into action by lobbying other regional bodies with heavy representation at the world engineering body, in order to secure victory for Nigeria and Africa at the polls.

The President thanked the Minister and  also commended him for his immense contribution to the growth of the Society and the profession.

The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) is an international organization representing the engineering profession worldwide.

Founded in 1968 by a group of regional engineering organizations, under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) in Paris, it brings together national engineering organizations from over 90 nations and represents some 20 millions engineers from around the world. The current President is Eng Jorge Spitalnik from Brazil.

It will be recalled that Nigeria successfully hosted the World Engineers at the 2014 Annual Conference. Tagged WECSI2014-World Engineering Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure with theme “Development of Sustainable Infrastructure in Africa”.


About Engr. Mustafa B. Shehu 

Engr. Mustafa Balarabe Shehu, President, Federation of African Engineering Organizations (FAEO) the Chairman/CEO MBS Engineering Limited, studied electrical engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria where he graduated in 1985. He started his working career with the National Electric Power Authority in Egbin, Lagos in 1986 after which he got appointed by the Kano State Rural Electricity Board in 1988 where he served up to his resignation in 1998 at the position of Deputy Director.

Having resigned from the civil service in 1998, he established Amal Engineering Services Limited, which was later, renamed as MBS Engineering Limited. It is an engineering firm involved in power systems designs, building services, renewable energy technologies, environmental engineering, cost engineering and project management amongst other services. It has wide clientele base ranging from Federal and State Government Organizations, Transmission Company of Nigeria, Central Bank of Nigeria among others.

Engr. Mustafa Shehu participates actively in the activities of professional and business Associations. It is in these regards he holds the following positions:

1. President, Federation of African Engineering Organizations (FAEO),
2. Immediate Past President, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE),
3. Past Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Kano Branch
4. Member, Governing Council, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI (2012-2013)
5. Member, Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN
6. Chairman, Governing Council, Nigerian Society of Engineers-Taming African Deserts (NSE-TAD)
7. 2nd Deputy President, Kano Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines & Agriculture (KACCIMA).

He is registered as Electrical Engineer with the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria. He is a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers as well as Fellow of the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria.
