NIGERIAN ENGINEERS PLAN COMMUNITY ENGINEERING DEVELOPMENT PROJECT IN RURAL AREAS


Nigerian Society of Engineers has revealed plan to embark on community Engineering Development Projects in Rural Areas across the six Geopolitical zones in the country.

This was contained in the address delivered by the President, Engr Adekunle Mokuolu during the 25 Year Anniversary celebration of Ikeja Branch of the NSE in Lagos.

The project, according to him, is part of his administration's focus on Corporate Social Responsibility of the Society and a means to support the rural infrastructure development.

The Initiative “will involves deployment of engineering professional manpower to rural communities across Nigeria with the objective to provide basic engineering infrastructure through voluntary service. Infrastructures like rural roads, water projects, school buildings, electrification, provision of farming implements, building of livestock ranches, poultries, and such other services that are guaranteed to foster unity and progress in our country will be involved.” Mokuolu said.

Further, he revealed that the projects are designed to be a collaborative venture between the NSE, Local Governments and the traditional institutions across the country and a transparent process of selecting six (6) remote villages, one from each of the geopolitical zones in Nigeria, for the Pilot Community Engineering Project (CEP).scheme has commenced.

He said the project is estimated to cost of N2 billion and will be funded through donation from public spirited individuals, corporate organizations, international donors and friends of engineering. He also urges the engineers to be prepared to contribute to its success through their expertise.

Earlier, he has commended the Ikeja Branch of NSE while acknowledging the roles of the Branch in the development of Engineering in the country as well as at the NSE in general. He praised the courage and tenacity of past leaders who in his words " made various personal sacrifices in combination to hard work, all in the bid to build a national umbrella organization for us.”

Indeed, for engineers, it is celebration galore in the 2018 and various milestones recorded by the engineering community. This year, the NSE  marked its 60th Anniversary on February 16; the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, WFEO (which NSE is a member), marks its 50th Anniversary while our sister engineers in Ghana also celebrated their 50th Anniversary.

Engr Mokuolu congratulated the Ikeja Branch of NSE and commended the members for their contributions to nation building different engineering practices. He challenged the Branch and its members to continue to be worthy ambassadors of the Society.

The event was attended by High Chief Dr Raymond Dospesi, COREN President, Engr Kashim Ali while Engr Joseeph Makoju, Honorary Adviser to the President/CEO of  of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote who was represented by  Engr Auwalu was the Guest Speaker at the event, Engr Olorunfemi Isaac, Former President of NSE, Engr Felicia Agubata, APWEN President, Engr Fola Akinkuotu, MD/CEO Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA; Engr Ali Rabiu (Cigarin Lafia) a former Vice President of NSE, Engr Joseph Akinteye, a Vice President of NSE and many others.

It capped the week long activities put together by the Branch to commemorate the Silver Jubilee while it also launched it History Book and honoured past leaders.
