The Kwara State Technical Committee (STC) of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has warned Kwarans to stay away from the Local Government Shopping Complex at Egbejila Junction, opposite Ilorin International Airport, Ilorin.
The Chairman of Kwara COREN STC, Engr. Bashiru Atunde Lawal, FNSE, made this call during an Inspection Visits to construction sites by the Committee.
The COREN STC Chairman remarked that COREN sealed the Shopping Complex site on the 29th of June, 2022, after giving a stop-work order and summoning the Engineering Personnel on the Project to the COREN Area Office.
According to him, the decision to seal the Site came after critical observations of defects in the construction of the Shopping Complex.
He also made it known that the Contractor handling the construction of the shopping complex had earlier declined a stop-work order by the State Physical Planning Authority (Town Planning).
The STC Chairman expressed displeasure with the fact that a Contractor handling a Project owned by a Local Government Council in the State disregarded the directives of constituted regulatory authorities and went ahead to plaster the building; an act suspected to be a deliberate cover-up of the defects observed on the building.
The COREN STC referred to the Shopping Complex as a time bomb that MUST be avoided by all while charging Kwarans to stay clear of the building until a Structural Integrity Test is carried out on the building.
