The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has advised the Lagos State government to establish an Infrastructure Protection Agency. President of NSE, Engr. Ademola Isaac Olorunfemi, FNSE, made the proposal to the Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) when he visited the Governor at the Government House in Alausa, Ikeja on Monday, 26th May, 2014.
Olorunfemi was accompanied by the leadership of the five NSE Branches in Lagos and other senior Engineers. He bemoaned the spate of infrastructure vandalism by hoodlums in the country and in Lagos State in particular.
The President told the Governor that establishment of the agency had become essential for government to prevent social amenities provided with hard earned public funds from being damaged by miscreants.
Earlier, the President commended the Governor on the delivery on infrastructure:
“I want to congratulate and commend Your Excellency for embarking on various developmental projects which have transformed and would continue to transform the landscape and lives of the people of Lagos State.
“Few of such projects that readily come to mind are the first ever Lekki-Ikoyi cable link bridge, IPP at Akute, Marina and Alausa (Secretariat now in constant power supply), Traffic Radio, Dredging and Construction of major water channels for flood control, Waterfront Infrastructure Development including the visionary Eko Atlantic City Project and new Bar Beach, Lagos State Light Rail Project amongst others”
His Excellency, in response, thanked the NSE delegation for the visit and urged effort towards sustaining the smooth relations between government and the Society. He told the President that the advice to create an Infrastructure Protection Agency was apt and his cabinet will immediately meet to deliberate on the issue.
He commended the active role played by members of the Society in the development of infrastructure in the State. He also urged action by the leadership of the Society to ensure better management of construction sites by members executing jobs in the State.
The Governor said such a step will eliminate a chaotic situation that is sometimes presented at construction sites to look like dumpsites. He explained that a situation where the sand, gravel and cement to be used at a construction site litter the road is not very tidy and that even in many instances such materials are dumped without any arrangement for the evacuation of waste from the sites.
He assured that the State is ready for partnerships that will aid effort of the State to achieve its dream of a modern city.
