200 MPH Houston-Dallas Bullet Train Planned

A 200 mph Houston-Dallas bullet train is being planned by a private company called Texas Central Railway. The company’s CEO is Richard Lawless, who lived in Tokyo when he was a C.I.A officer in the 1980s and rode the Shinkansen bullet train. This train covers about 300 miles between Tokyo and Osaka averaging well over 100 mph for each trip. Currently,   the Texas bullet train project is gradually shaping up , with an environmental impact study under way. It has been very quietly progressing over the last four years or so. A website for Texas Central Rail says the plan is to have a high-speed rail route that is competitive with flying and faster than driving. When we hear of monumental plans such as this one, we may tend to think of government subsidies and the cost to taxpayers. This project is completely set up to be funded by private interests. The cost has been estimated at around $ 10 billion. Japan’s JR Central railway is one of the Texas company’s backers,so there is m

Liberia closes border crossings amid Ebola crisis

Liberia's president has closed all but three land border crossings, restricted public gatherings and quarantined communities heavily affected by the Ebola outbreak in the West African nation. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf described the measures late Sunday after the first meeting of a new taskforce she created and is chairing to contain the disease, which has killed 129 people in the country and more than 670 across the region. There is no known cure for Ebola, which begins with symptoms including fever and sore throat and escalates to vomiting, diarrhea and internal bleeding. The disease spreads through direct contact with blood and other bodily fluids as well as indirect contact with "environments contaminated with such fluids," according to the World Health Organization. A top Liberian doctor working at Liberia's largest hospital died Saturday, and two American aid workers in the country have fallen ill, underscoring the dangers facing those charged with br

The last time I was in Enugu, like 8 years ago, the owner of the hotel I stayed in asked, upon us checking in “where is your mopol?” Well Ok, I had a British man in tow. We didn’t have any MOPOL (armed mobile police) , but we managed to survive for about 5 days. And we enjoyed the place. Sleepy town, good people. Very service oriented. But Enugu is now on steroid. Not in a bad way. And anyone who can get involved should. I want to presume that the entire SouthEast of Nigeria is on the uptick. The first thing I noticed this time is that the general scare and lockdown in the rest of the country was missing in the SouthEast. At least in Enugu. I couldn’t believe the ease with which people accessed shopping malls and hotels. There was no unnecessary air of suspicion and it was touching. But after two days in Enugu I realized that every citizen in this place had a kind of paternalistic ownership of the town and ensured that things went on normally. Enugu, unlike Abuja where I live, is not
