Who is Engr Hauwa Muhammed Sadique, the new Nigerian Women Engineers' President?


On  18th February 2016, The Association of Professional Women Engineers in Nigeria would be inaugurating their 14th President in Abuja at NAF Conference Centre & Suites, Abuja. She would be taking over from Engr Nnoli Akpedeye, a seasoned energy expert who left many memorable moments in the anal of the Association.


Founded by about six (6) professional women engineers led by Engr. (Mrs.) J. O. Maduka in 1982 as a pressure group to protests against the lopsided utilization of women in engineering and to offer strong voice for practicing women in engineering while aiming to deconstruct the general conception that women's education ends in the kitchen and not on construction sites or behind the desk carrying out engineering designs, The Division has since grown in leap and bound with thousands of members all over the country and has become a Division of Nigerian Society of Engineers, the umbrella body for all engineers in Nigeria.

The organisation objectives include: providing a forum for promoting sorority among female engineers, encourage engineering studies and practice amongst female Nigerians and to create a platform by which women engineers can collaborate with other women in other professions in Nigeria and elsewhere, to continuously increase awareness that engineering is also a career for girls, thereby improving the strength of female engineers, to encourage women to achieve professional excellence as engineers and leaders and promote the engineering profession as a positive force in enhancing the quality of life.

So who is Engr Hauwa Saddique, the new President?

Engr. Hauwa Muhammed Sadique was born on 3rd February, 1969 to the family of Late Muhammed Abubakar Shuwa and Hajiya Amina Muhammed Shuwa who hail from Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State. She started her Primary Education from Army Command Children School (NDA) Kaduna, 1976 and later Queen Amina College Kakuri, Kaduna State. She later attended the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi where she had National Diploma in Agric Engineering Technology and later proceeded to University of Maiduguri were she had Bachelor of Engineering in Agricultural Engineering between 1990-1994. In 2004–2005, she bagged Msc Economics from Bayero University, Kano.

This engineer started her education as a Classroom Teacher at Airforce Primary School and FAAN Staff School, Kano before she was employed with the then Family Economic Advancement Programme (FEAP) 1999. When FEAP was scraped and later became National Poverty Eradication Programme in 2004, her appointment was regularized and was posted to Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources where started her engineering career.

by dint of hard work and commitment over the years, she is now a Chief Engineer with Federal Ministry of Water Resources in the Department of Dams and Reservoir Operations (Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority), Kano.

She is a Member of numerous professional bodies which include; Nigerian Institute of Agricultural Engineers (NIAE), Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), National Institute of Cost and Appraise Engineers, Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Illinois Chicago, USA, International Women Engineers and Scientist & Women in Engineering (WFEO)/UNESCO. She is also a Registered Engineer with Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Over the years, the amiable leader, sometimes called Alhaja,  has served  engineering community  in the following capacities:

Technical Secretary APWEN Kano Chapter, Financial Secretary APWEN Kano Chapter, Ex-Officio APWEN National, General Secretary APWEN National, Vice President APWEN National & Member Audit Committee NSE 2010-2015.

She has attended many short courses both home and abroad among which are; Maintenance Supervision Course (ITF), Machinery and Equipment Valuation, American Society of Cost and Appraise Engineers (ICAE), Project Management Course at Galilee Institute of Management, Israel, International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientist 2011-2015, Mandatory Training at Civil Service Institute of Nigeria (ASCON), among others.

She has coordinated and supervised many projects of the federal government.

Engr. Hauwa is a devout Muslim married to Air Commodore A.M. Sadique; a good mother to brilliant  boys and girls and a kind hearted person whose commitment to excellence is unquestionable.
