Economic viability: NSE vows to intensify agenda setting on engineering practice

The Nigerian Society of Engineers, (NSE), has reiterated its resolve to escalate agenda setting for the in-coming administration both at the federal and state levels towards embracing the study and practice of engineering in the country towards the nation’s economic growth, wrote Miriam Humbe.

President of NSE, Engr. Ademola Isaac Olorunfemi made the resolve during a press briefing hinged on burning national issues and agenda setting for the incoming political administration about to be voted into office.

“There is no doubting the fact that every nation that has become great in the last three centuries, without exception, has had to seriously encourage the study and practice of engineering which has over the centuries, led to the physical and economic development of such nations,” he said.

While citing the examples of developing nations like South Korea, China, Malaysia and Singapore, Engr. Olorunfemi said “the application of engineering provides us with the necessary speed and acceleration in the race for growth of the economy and the generation of national wealth”.

He commended the interest shown by President Goodluck Jonathan in the affairs of National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI as chairman of the agency, by personally chairing two board meetings in the past one year and urged the in-coming administration to continue in the same stride.

Engr. Olorunfemi also advised that the statutory provision contained in the NASENI Act that deduction of one percent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP, should be reserved for the implementation of the NASENI mandate should be upheld as a way forward for Nigeria in the development of engineering, technology and innovation.
