Governor Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State on Friday urged the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) to check the menace of fake engineers and building collapse.

The governor gave the advice when the leaders of COREN paid him a courtesy visit in Lafia.

He said that the task before the council was challenging in view of the incessant cases of collapse of

buildings and bridges in some parts of the country.

Al-Makura, however, blamed the development on the use of substandard materials for constructions and the activities of fake engineers.

“COREN as a regulatory body for professionals in the industry should take the issue of quacks seriously in order to resolve cases of building collapse and protect the reputation of the engineering profession,’’ he said.

The governor noted that the engineering profession had been providing an enabling environment for all other professions to thrive.

Al-Makura said that his administration would continue to support and collaborate with COREN in efforts to ensure that projects in the state met the required standard.

Earlier, Mr Kassim Ali, the National President of COREN, conveyed the council’s commitment to regulating the practice of engineering in all ramifications.
